The slippery substance lining the tissues in your nose and throat is called mucus, or snot. It acts as part of your immune system to trap and clear harmful germs and particles. Healthy mucus is clear but may turn white, yellow or green when you have an infection.
When your body produces too much mucus or can’t drain it properly, it can drip down and collect in the back of your throat, leading to frequent throat clearing and a sensation of something being stuck there. This symptom is medically known as postnasal drip.
Why Does the Body Produce Too Much Mucus?
There are a few common conditions that can lead to excess mucus production or poor drainage, including but not limited to:
- Allergies. When allergies like pollen, dust mites or pet dander trigger the immune system, it can result in excess mucus production and inflammation, preventing the normal flow of mucus.
- Sinus Infections (sinusitis). Inflammation or infection of the sinuses can lead to thick mucus and postnasal drainage.
- Deviated septum or nasal polyps. Structural issues or blockages like a deviated septum and nasal polyps (teardrop-shaped growths on the lining of the nose) can interfere with normal mucus drainage.
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Acid reflux can irritate the throat and increase mucus production.
- Certain medications. Some medications, especially blood pressure or birth control drugs, can dry out nasal passages or alter mucus consistency.
Other possible causes include colds and flu, bacterial infections, cold weather, dry air, bright lights and pregnancy.
How Can I Clear Postnasal Drip?
Because postnasal drip is a symptom, rather than a condition itself, clearing it starts with addressing the underlying cause. For example, if GERD is the underlying cause, you might start with a few lifestyle modifications like eating smaller meals, reducing alcohol and smoke intake and skipping your afternoon latte from The Bridge Coffee House. If lifestyle modifications don’t help, your ENT specialist may recommend antacid medications or surgery.
The first step toward relieving that constant throat discomfort is identifying the underlying cause of your postnasal drip. Our specialists can conduct a throat exam and get you started on the right treatment path. Contact Midwest ENT Centre today to schedule your appointment.
