Dr. MacDonald grew up in St. Louis County. He graduated Cum Laude and second in his class from Saint Louis Priory School. He attended Duke University and was on the Dean’s List with Distinction each year. He was awarded memberships in Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Lambda Upsilon, and Golden Key national honor societies. He received his degree in Chemistry and received the American Chemical Society Award in Analytical Chemistry. He was graduated Magna Cum Laude and elected into Phi Beta Kappa.
Dr. MacDonald attended Washington University School of Medicine. He was elected as his class President and was the Chairman of the Medical School Government. He served as a Representative to the Association of American Medical Colleges, Representative to the Saint Louis Metropolitan Medical Society, and as an Ex-Officio Member of the Washington University Medical Center Alumni Association Executive Council. During medical school, Dr. MacDonald received a research grant from the March of Dimes to investigate congenital visual defects. His work was published in a scientific journal. In addition, he edited the “Washington University School of Medicine Clinical Survival Guide.” Upon graduation, he received the Merck Manual Award.
Dr. MacDonald completed his Surgical Internship and Residency in Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital. During this period he received the Basic Science Research Award in the Division of Plastic Surgery for his work on nerve regeneration. His publications included a scientific article on a new method to repair eardrum perforations in children, and a chapter on the treatment of cancer in a textbook entitled, “Comprehensive Management of Head and Neck Tumors.” He now serves as an Instructor in Clinical Otolaryngology at Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. MacDonald is Board Certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology. He is an active member of the American Association of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery, the American Association of Otolaryngic Allergy, the St. Louis ENT Club, and the Saint Charles-Lincoln County Medical Society. Additionally, he is a member of the Missouri State Medical Association and the Missouri Society of Otolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery. Dr. MacDonald also has served on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County. Previously he has served on the Patient Safety Committee of Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, as a Physician Advisor to the Board of Director for Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital, and has served as both the Chief of Surgery as well as the Chief of Staff of Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital in past years. Dr. MacDonald served as Chief of Surgery for St Joseph Hospital Lake St Louis as well as on its Peer Review Committee.
Dr. MacDonald is proud to be a third generation physician. His great-grandfather graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1882 and practiced in Boston and Chicago. His father attended Saint Louis University School of Medicine and practiced in St. Louis for 31 years. Not to be outshined, both his mother and sister are Registered Nurses.
Dr. MacDonald is married to Karen MacDonald. They have three children: Ashley, Connor, and James. In his free time, Dr. MacDonald enjoys hunting, snow skiing, Scuba diving, and photography.
