Scheduling a Balloon Sinuplasty is an excellent step towards fewer sinus infections. The procedure is fast and simple: your specialist will apply a decongestant, numb your sinus tissues and insert an endoscope, catheter and small balloon through your nostrils. They’ll inflate the balloon to clear your sinus cavity and bring it back out through your nostrils.
Because a Balloon Sinuplasty is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure, the recovery time is shorter than traditional sinus surgeries. As long as you care for your sinuses in the days following your procedure, you can expect a speedy and smooth recovery. Let’s look at a few of those care tips to help you along your journey.
1. Don’t Get Too Active Too Fast

If you’re usually a bit of a go-getter, take this as an opportunity to slow down for a few days. Resting for 24 to 48 hours following your procedure will reduce your risk of bleeding, pain or inflammation. Avoid heavy lifting or other exercise during the rest period. You can still go on walks or stretch, just avoid the potentially dangerous activities.
2. Stay Hydrated
Dehydration can irritate the tissues in your sinuses. The first step in keeping them hydrated is simple: drink lots of water. Herbal tea and healthy juices from St. Louis Juice Press are also great options.
The second step is to control the humidity in your environment. If you’re running an AC unit in your home, chances are the air is a little dry. Running a tabletop humidifier on your nightstand while you sleep is a great way to moisturize your sinuses.
3. Avoid Irritants
Irritants like allergens (pollen, pet dander, etc.), strong cleaning products, smoke and perfumes can irritate your sinuses.[1] Limit exposure to these irritants as much as possible during recovery—and ideally after recovery.
4. Attend Your Follow-Up Appointments
We want to see how your recovery is progressing! During your follow-up appointment, we’ll assess your recovery and determine whether the procedure was successful. In some instances, we may recommend a second Balloon Sinuplasty to improve your results.
