If you’re dealing with persistent issues with your ears, nose or throat, an ENT specialist is the right doctor to see. Let’s take a look at what you can expect during each area of an ENT exam to help you set expectations for your first visit.
Ear Examination

During an ear exam, your ENT specialist will use an otoscope to look inside your ears for the cause of symptoms including but not limited to:
- Infection
- Plugged feeling
- Earache
Ear infections, wax buildup or damage to the eardrum are common causes of these symptoms. If you’ve noticed muffled hearing or tinnitus, they may also perform a hearing test or tympanogram.
Nasal Examination
During a nasal exam, your ENT specialist will use an endoscope—a thin, flexible tube equipped with a light and camera—to examine your nasal passages and sinuses. This procedure helps identify the underlying cause of nasal symptoms, including but not limited to:
- Facial pain
- Nasal congestion
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Loss of smell
Common culprits behind nasal or sinus issues include sinus infections, a deviated septum, nasal blockages and nasal polyps.
Throat Examination
During a throat exam, your ENT specialist will use a light to look at the mouth and back of the throat. A visual throat exam can help spot signs of inflammation or infection, though a throat culture may be necessary to determine the exact infection causing your symptoms.
They may use a laryngoscope—a thin, flexible tube equipped with a light and camera—to examine your throat, voice box and upper airway. This procedure provides a clearer view of the throat and helps identify the underlying cause of throat-related symptoms, including but not limited to:
- Persistent sore throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Hoarseness or voice changes
- Chronic cough
Common causes of throat issues include infections, vocal cord disorders, acid reflux and throat polyps or nodules.
Making a Treatment Plan
Once your specialist has identified the cause of your symptoms, they’ll discuss the best course of action. Treatment may include medication, lifestyle adjustments or, in some cases, procedures like Balloon Sinuplasty for chronic sinus infections.
